About this report
This is our sixth Corporate Responsibility (CR) Report based on the GRI framework. For the second time, the report is prepared according to GRI G4 guidelines at Core level. This report, together with our online Annual Review 2014 and Financial Review 2014, provides information about our performance and future outlook.
The CR Report focuses on issues that are considered to be the most material regarding our economic, social and environmental performance. These areas were identified during materiality analysis in 2013. The work was included in our revised CR long-term plan, which is implemented until the end of the current strategy period 2016.
Our CR report includes the Parent company Tieto Corporation and all subsidiaries over which the Parent company has direct or indirect control. The GRI Standard Disclosures cover the entire Tieto Group.
Unless otherwise stated, all information and data pertains to activities from 1 January to 31 December 2014. Note, however, that comparison figures for 2013 have been restated due to IFRS 11 'Joint arrangements'. The regional data is divided differently between HR and financial data due to system restrictions.
Our energy and corresponding emissions data for environmental indicators cover 100% of our operations. All data centres and significant offices were included in the data collection. The consumptions of a few smaller offices were estimated based on our global average values with a 10% safety margin. The original data sources are internal IT systems and invoices from utility providers.
Our energy and emission calculations follow the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, and emissions are reported in CO2. Some calculations are manually conducted. The source of the indirect energy emission factors is the International Energy Agency. Thus the energy source (renewable or non-renewable) is not taken into account. The CO2 factor for diesel oil was updated in 2013 according to DEFRA, which then caused an increase in emissions but now shows a more steady trend. Due to a change in travel management system, flight CO2 factors have been updated. The first half of 2014 was calculated using the previously used CO2 factors from the Technical Research Centre of Finland, VTT. The second half of 2014 is reported using information from a new system and new CO2 factors from Defra.
The base year for the environmental calculations is 2012. In the report, the metric ton/UK tonne equivalent to 1 000 kilograms is stated solely as ton. No restatements were done.
Equally, the travel data was collected from the company IT systems and service providers. Data collection for flight information covers 99% of operations, and taxi and employee car use information covers 75% and 94%, respectively. Locations with major operations and a significant amount of travel are within the scope. Several emission factors from governmental and international organizational sources were used to calculate the generated emissions.
Our employee related calculations use GRI scoping. The data sources are company systems, which provide data on full-time and part-time employees and permanent and temporary employees. Some of our data collection routines are still to be adjusted to the GRI G4 and some data is currently unavailable in our internal systems. In addition, preparation for supplier assessment has been started in 2014 but no GRI supplier assessment indicators are yet reported in this report.
The report's performance data, disclosures and statements are assured to a moderate level type 2 in accordance with the AA1000 Assurance Standard (2008) – see Assurance Statement. Our assurer, Ethos International, has provided a third-party check confirming our application of the GRI G4 guidelines at Core level. Assurance increases transparency and is key to delivering a high-quality report.
This report is also our annual Communication on Progress in accordance with the UN Global Compact requirements. It qualifies for the GC Advanced level.
Our previous report, Tieto CR Report 2013, was published on 27 May 2013.

We have been an organizational stakeholder of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) since 2011, and were one of the forerunners in 2014 to use their new GRI G4 sustainability reporting guideline.
We increased ISO 14001 certification significantly during 2014. At the end of the year, approximately 62% of our employees were covered by this environmental certificate.
